Earl of Sandwich

In 1762, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, came up with an invention that changed dining forever.  With a serving of roast beef placed between two slices of bread, the Earl created a complete meal he could eat with his hands.  The Sandwich was born.  Some 250 years later, Earl of Sandwich restaurants have taken that idea and created it into a made-to-order, freshly baked Sandwich like no other.  Earl of Sandwich is a franchise restaurant with 3 locations in San Antonio, Texas.

Margaret Moreno contacted the SBDC with interest in purchasing an Earl of Sandwich franchise in San Antonio.  Senior Certified Business Advisor, Richard Sifuentes, assisted her with a variety of business start-up activities including developing a business plan, consultation on legal structure set-up and assistance addressing accounting and construction issues.  After careful planning, Ms. Moreno was able to open her first Earl of Sandwich shop near Blanco Road and Loop 1604 in San Antonio.  With continued planning support from Mr. Sifuentes, she expanded her services to include a catering department, opened a second location (off DeZavala Road at IH10) and a third location near Blanco Road and Loop 410.  Her three stores have created over 60 jobs.

Hua “Dang” Clarke has worked in the restaurant industry for more than 20 years and decided it was time to open her own business.  In May 2006, she opened Aw Dang Asian Cuisine Restaurant in Schertz, Texas.  The restaurant features Hunan-style Chinese food.

Dang and her husband, Gary, met with SBDC’s Senior Certified Business Advisor David Baenziger in July 2005.  With David as their guide, the Clarkes were able to develop a business plan, as well as their operational and project budgets.  They also worked on developing financial projections for the lender, and David counseled them on the loan and business start-up processes.  They received a loan from Wells Fargo Bank.  Dang said, “This restaurant would not have happened without the assistance that we received from David.  We had the restaurant experience but he provided the missing ingredients that were the financial expertise and the loan knowledge.”

"We are so busy working on our company that we often don't take the time to run our company.  There is a definite difference.  I've learned to take a step back and be more into running it than working it. I would recommend this program to anyone."

The BBE program shows you how to look at your business through different eyes or "lenses". It affords you the opportunity to plan and work on your business and not just in your business.

"Though we had a desire and passion to grow, we had reached a level of not knowing HOW to grow.  We were floundering.  What BBE did for us is it took us apart and we were restructured again.  We were renewed and reformulated.  It allowed us to take a new commitment to regrowth and it gave us a roadmap and a journey to follow."

BBE teaches you business skills as well as helping you concentrate on your growth goals and your vision for your company.
